Default Viper Traction Control - It actually works :)

I have an UGR TT 2006 SRT-10 Viper running pump gas + meth (no wiper fluid) that puts down 1058whp/1036wtq safely. The car is a ton of fun as is, but as everyone knows without traction, it does't matter how much power you have. I elected to be part of John Reed's pilot program for the Pectel Engine Management system - I could not be happier with the choice - we recently stepped up the knock control and set up the traction control - I have to say it performs beyond my expectations and feels like the "missing link" for high-hp RWD cars.

I have to admit, when John brought my car back today and we took it out for a spin, I was a little reserved about dropping the hammer in 2nd gear as usually that simply leads to stepping the car out and letting off quickly. To my surprise, you can mat it in 2nd gear and it needs little to no driver steering input and flat out moves. You can "feel" the traction control doing it's job as it keeps the power to the ground.

John set up a nice little "slip knob" that allows me to adjust from full slip (smokey burnouts) to "WET" which essentially trys to prevent any slipping and will severely cut the power. I am current running in "2nd position" which allows some slip but keeps the engine singing along and the car planted.

With the traction control and boost by gear, it's time to go bike hunting again For any of you guys with Supras, Vipers, etc. or other RWD high-hp car, the traction control may be just the answer for safe fun.

I want to send a huge "thank you" to John Reed for his patience and dedication to making this a reality. As UGR built the car, it is of course rock solid and never misses a beat!

Here is a pic of my car:

Great stuff! I assume that a LC system could be built in?

Thanks Nick for the kind words, and yes the car is a blast to drive now! Always a pleasure working with you and UGR on the sweet builds.

I figured I would post up a bit of data to try and illustrate what is going on. They say a picture is worth 1000 words but I think in this case the pictures pale in comparison to an actual test drive but I will see how I can do.

The amount of slip is fully programmable vs speed/rpm, gear, and if fitted by lateral g-loading, shock movement, etc. On top of this adjustment is the driver select switch I added, and I can custom tailor the affect each position has on the overall control. Did I mention the launch control ties into the traction control? We have yet to dabble with that, though we might when Nick gets bit by the drag racing bug (which happens if you spend too much time in close proximity to Kevin). The car also has boost control by gear, which helps take some of the workload off the traction control by targeting an appropriate boost level per gear.

Below are two snapshots of log files. The first is with the TC disabled, and the second is with it in P2 (of positions 1-7, higher numbers allowing less slip). Bear in mind when looking at these logs, the MAP (boost) is in PSIa (absolute) so subtract 14.7 to get the PSIg (gauge) reading most of you are used to. I didn't want anyone thinking we had a screw loose with our pump gas tune. :-)

No TC applied:

An interesting comparison between these two datalogs. Both are second gear rips, and while this is not truly scientific (we will get some Vbox comparisons) the non TC run required 4.4 seconds to zip from 44mph to 65mph (true speed indicated on the front wheel) in the first log. The TC run did the same 44-65mph run in 1.52 seconds in the second log. Again, not scientific as my point of the test was not acceleration testing only (flooring it at relatively low rpm is hardly ideal) but the reason I picked 44mph is it was after I was heavy throttle on both runs, and they both end near 65mph. The seat of the pants feeling backs the relatively primitive calculations up though!

Looking forward to questions/comments!

Great post, John! Can't wait to see the LC in action!
The difference between TC and non TC is significant.

I may not do a formal kit for the Gen2 just due to lack of demand, however I could whip up a kit for the Gen2 pretty easily if someone wanted one. I have not looked into fitting the wheel speed sensors to a Gen2, and cars without ABS would be a bit more work.

Gen3 kit:

In the car, the brains behind the whole operation, Pectel SQ6:

In addition to traction control, the kit also has very sophisticated knock control using the two stock sensors, 10 cylinder sequential fuel (with peak/hold drive, no more driver boxes!), runs stock ignition or upgraded individual coils, uses all the stock sensors (save for the upgraded MAP sensor), etc.

So will this be the deciding factor in a race between the TTG and TT Gen 3/4?

It will sure help, though the limiting factor is still the tires (stickier tires allow us to crank the power till we bump into the TC again). I do know a certain red/black SRT10 Coupe with TC/no lift clutch-less shifting and some other goodies that can probably bring some pain to the TTG crowd. We will see!!
